REVIEW:
A long-standing tradition at
Hood College, their annual
performance of Handel's Messiah,
in conjunction with the United States Naval
Academy has been observed
for over sixty years. This recording,
taken from a 1976
performance, may be of value to those who have
cherished memories of
either institution, but for casual listeners
or Messiah
affeciandos, it's a wash.
Amateurish playing by the Naval Academy Band,
enthusiastic, but
unpolished singing by the combined Hood
College and Naval Academy
Choirs, clunky direction by John Talley, and
fruity, overdone solos
send this recording right to the bottom of the
heap of collectable LPs.
The most arresting element about this
concert is that
approximately thirty minutes of it was
captured on film, so that even
without having readily available sound clips,
you can see and hear the
first part of the concert, which is available
online at both archive.org and YouTube.
It's earnest and
undoubtedly of sentimental value to those who
are alumni of these
institutions, but not in any sense an
essential addition to any Messiah
collection.
