REVIEW: This 1953
German recording by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt
has the distinction of being the earliest
Mozart-arranged Der Messias I've found.
Swedish recording label Relief has done
an admirable job at transferring the program
to CD, with rich, vibrant mono sound sounding
as clear as bright as one could wish.
Being from the 1950s, this performance
adheres to the period's grand tradition in its
slow tempos and expansive reading; the
soloists sing with full-throated, operatic
grandeur, and the Külner-Rundfunk Symphony
Orchestra plays thickly and impressively on
modern instruments. The NWDR Choir of
Hamburg/Kölm (who sound very large and grand
indeed) are placed somewhat distantly back in
the recording, and their forward forced
singing occasionally pushes them out of tune,
especially on the upper registers, but they
have an admirable blend and power. Tenor
Rudolph Schock sings with a rich, commanding
tone, as does alto Lore Fischer; bass Kurt
Böhme has a dark, woody tone which I found
pleasant, if a little hollow, while soprano
Anny Schlemm has a suituably bell-like quality
to her tone. This is a performance that
resonates with power and passion, albeit
within the confines of the severely restrained
tempos, which sound glacial, even considering
this recording is a contemporary of other,
similar recordings by Hermann
Scherchen and Sir
Adrian
Boult. Schmidt-Isserstedt's
conducting contains much nuance within it's
expansiveness, and the playing and singing by
all forces are full of life and feeling.
The playing and singing are so very
good, with an encompassing richness of tone
and splendor that makes it an easy
recommendation for those who enjoy large,
grand Messiahs.
